PONGTORN TECHABOONAKHO

Bangkok-born, Pongtorn Techaboonakho (b.1996) is a composer, film music composer, and sound engineer from Bangkok, Thailand. He started playing the guitar at the age of 15 with Chairat Pornamnuay. Later, he entered a Young Artist Music Program at the College of Music, Mahidol University in 2012, majoring in guitar performance. In 2015, he was accepted as a fellow and fully awarded a scholarship at Princess Galyani Vadhana Institute of Music (PGVIM), where he studied guitar lessons with Padet Netpakdee as well as music composition with Dr Anothai Nitibhon, Dr Jean-David Caillouët, and Dr Jiradej Setabundhu. In addition, he received a Bachelor’s of Music in western music performance with first-class honour. In 2021, he finished his Master’s Degree in mixed composition at the University of Birmingham (England) under the supervision of Dr Scott Wilson.

Currently, he is pursuing and exploring the world in another Master’s Degree in Contemporary Music Creation at Musikene (Spain) under the supervision of Ramon Lazkano. He is also studying with Zuriñe F. Gerenabarrena,  Stefano Scarani and a Thai composer, Piyawat Louilarpprasert. Also, he has a chance to study with composers including Annie Mahtani, Luis Tinoco and more.

With a great passion and inspiration to elaborate the uniqueness of sound, his music composition expertise explores the possibilities of using acoustic instruments with technology present in both contemporary music composition and film scoring. He had collaborated with many ensembles such as Ensemble Intercontemporain (France), Klangforum Wien (Austria), Birmingham Contemporary Music Group (United Kingdom), Ensemble TIMF (South Korea), SETTS (Singapore), and Tacet(i) (Thailand). He was a founding member and composer at Ensemble Laboratory [EnLab]. Also, he is a member of Birmingham ElectroAcoustic Sound Theatre (BEAST), and was a former member of Ensemble Laboratory [EnLab] as a composer and guitarist.

As a composer, he had commissioned by Tacet(i) as a part of British Council Project 2021: UK-SEA Connections Through Culture. He was a recipient of “Grand Prize” in the Young Thai Artist Award 2021. He received a prize from Princess Galyani Vadhana Institute of Music Youth Orchestra Call for Score (2020) as a finalist and a featured artist at Thailand New Music and Arts Symposium 2019. Recently, he participated in the “ASEAN Youth Ensemble” organized by the Princess Galyani Vadhana Institute of music.

Moreover, he is also associated as a composer for motion pictures such as “Von the Movie”(2021) and with well-known Thai film music composer – Chapavich Temnitikul (Film Scoring) in “Dew” the movie (2019), and many others Netflix’s film and series. He is also taking part as a co-founder, producer, and sound engineer at Thinker Interactive from 2019 to 2022. Furthermore, he collaborates with Thailand Music and Arts Organization (TMAO) as an artist and technician.
